Etiquette and Legal Requirements
for Setting up a Collection Website
If you plan to, or have
setup a website which contains images taken from elsewhere on the Internet,
and you do not have the copyright to the images, the following are some
guidelines to make you life less stressful, and keep you out of any legal
action, website removal, ISP access removal, public beatings etc.
-
All images on the Internet are
copyrighted to their original producer, whether or not there is any text
stating this either on the picture or on the original (or other collection)
website where thay were obtained from.
-
If you know the source of the
pictures, you should check with the owner what their policy is on other
sites using the images: some sites will have a message on them, otherwise
email the webmaster or contact address.
-
Most sites are happy for you
to redisplay their images PROVIDED that you credit where the pictures have
come from, and give a link to their website.
-
DO NOT underany circumstances
directly link an image from the original website, this is called BANDWIDTH
THEFT, and is regarded even more seriously than breaches of copyright.
To use an image, you must have it loaded onto a website of your own.
-
If any images are uncredited,
then place a general message CLEARLY on the website stating something like:
ALL the images on this website
are copyrighted to their original producers.
On request from them, they
will be removed, or a link and credit will be provided.
If anyone has anything
to add to this (or any corrections), then please email
me.
